Archery at Al’s
I have been an avid archer for years. In fact, archery was probably my first love. Being a native New Yorker it was difficult for me as a young child to go out and shoot a bow, so I didn’t start to excel in archery until I was around 30. In 1998 I was ranked 93rd in the world, and now I want to share my experience with the rest of New York. Archery was one of the first Olympic sports and has a wonderful history. Most people seem to connect archery to hunting, but archery in itself (target shooting) is first and foremost fun. It also builds your concentration and upper body strenght. When target shooting, you shoot at a foam target, and compensate for wind, sun (which changes the picture) and temperature… bows react differently in the cold than they do in the heat. The materials and technology now reduce the effects of the elements. The great thing about shooting a bow is that you’re not limited to the warm weather. You can shoot during the winter in an indoor range, the problem is most of the ranges are outside of the manhattan, in Queens, Brooklynn and New Jersey. Clubs are the way to go in the winter. If you need advice on where to go, need help with your equipment, or just love to chat about the sport, pop in and say “hi.”
